Debra J. Kay's Profile Image

Attorney Debra J. Kay joined Strickler, Platnick & Hatfield in 2024, bringing with her decades of experience as a family law attorney and mediator. Debra previously lived and practiced in the Los Angeles area for many years. A graduate of Pepperdine University School of Law, Debra was a California State Bar Certified Specialist in Family Law, and was the owner and lead attorney of a law firm that focused almost exclusively on family law matters in California.

Debra J. Kay concentrates her practice in family law because she enjoys working with people, and few other practice areas offer the opportunity to have such an impact on people’s lives and futures. Debra also likes the way that family law practice intersects with so many other practice areas, including tax law, property law, business law, and more.

After her two adult children settled in the Washington, D.C. area, Debra decided to follow suit, and that decision ultimately benefited Strickler, Platnick & Hatfield and the firm’s clients. In addition to her wealth of practical experience, Debra is a compassionate listener with a gift for getting people to open up, which our clients deeply appreciate. She is also skilled at integrating information and coming up with creative and effective solutions to complex family law issues.

Debra’s intellectual curiosity makes her a great problem-solver for the firm’s clients, and she also makes excellent use of it outside the office; she is pursuing a Ph.D. and is presently working on her dissertation.

When not occupied with legal work or studies, Debra is an avid genealogist and has lectured at genealogical conferences both in the United States and internationally.
